Nomadico - Cheap Seat Upgrades, Train Travel, Non-owner Car Insurance
Car Insurance for People Who Don't Own a Car
If you frequently rent a car but don’t own one, you usually end up paying an extra $13 to $22 per day for liability insurance—credit cards and travel insurance usually won’t cover that aspect. You can buy a “Non-owners policy” from several companies that will cover liability for every rental. Then most premium credit cards will cover the collision damage part so you can waive that also. You usually need to request this by phone. Mine is from GEICO (800-207-7847).
The Best Train Travel Resource
If you want to travel anywhere by train, start with the site The Man in Seat 61. It’s one of the oldest and best resources for any place in the world that has passenger rail service. It’ll tell you what to expect in different classes, how long a trip takes, and where you can book tickets in advance.
A Cheap Upgrade on Your Flight
While figuring out the ticket price on a budget airline can be a pain with all the extra fees, I’ve discovered one perk of using them that doesn’t cost much: paying for a better seat. On airlines like Viva Aerobus and Volaris of Mexico; Allegiant, or Frontier in the USA; or Ryanair in Europe, the difference between the worst seat and the best can be as little as $8, seldom more than a $20 premium. Buy yourself an upgrade to the bulkhead or exit row for guaranteed legroom and you could be more comfortable than you would be on a legacy airline.
Expat Backlash in Portugal
If you're thinking of moving to Portugal or just staying a while with a digital nomad visa, you might want to venture beyond the expatriate hotspots of Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve. Rents are rising fast in those areas thanks to free-spending foreigners (especially Californians) and the locals aren't exactly thrilled.
