But a much cheaper way is to have Velcro sowen into the inside of your pockets, use a strip about one inch wide. Leave an inch or so open at one end so you can get a finger in to release the Velcro. Beleve me a pickpocket will not get past that without being noticed they will look for an easier mark.
Yes, there are lots of ways to avoid being the easy target and Velcro can help, as can the many travel pants that have a built-in zipper. Just as with a house though, the more barriers they have to get through the better. I hate to rely on just one in an area known for a high incidence of theft, like Barcelona, Rome, or Athens.
