Oaxaca is not cheap anymore thanks to all the publications that have featured it. And Mexico is not cheap anymore thanks to the inflation and the rise of the peso!

When I first started coming to Mexico, it was 10 pesos to the dollar. Sure, it got up to 20, which made the country unusually cheap, but it has settled around 17 for the moment, so it's still a great value. EVERY country has been dealing with inflation over the past year but Mexico has fared better than most because it grows a lot and makes a lot. Its middle class is expanding steadily though, which is a good thing, so of course over time it will cost more. It's still less than half of what you'd spend to live in the USA for a typical basket of expenses, even less if you're in the interior like I am. Some outliers like health care and entertainment are 1/4 or 1/5 what they cost on the other side of the border. Oaxaca is more expensive than it was, but you can still find an Airbnb apartment for a month for under $700 and I just found four in centro for under $400. I found 24 hotels on Booking for $40 or less per night. Not a great backpacker bargain, but a deal for your average vacationer.
